Nobile officium

In Scots law, the noble power or office of the Court of Session and the High Court of Justiciary. An extraordinary equitable jurisdiction enabling the court to grant a remedy in situations where there is no legal rule dealing with a situation or the rule would be excessive, oppressive or burdensome.

For more on this, see Thomson, The nobile officium: still relevant, still useful (Law Society of Scotland, 60 Journal 12).
